GEO — be the answer AI gives

Generative Engine Optimization: make ChatGPT, Gemini and AI-powered search recommend your brand when your customers ask for solutions.

Why it works

Why GEO matters right now

  • #1: Your customers already ask AI
More and more buying decisions start with a question to ChatGPT or AI search — be the brand it names.
  • #2: First-mover advantage
Most competitors haven't started. Claiming this position now is cheap; later it will be expensive.
  • #3: Builds on your SEO
Strong content and authority feed both Google rankings and AI citations — double return on one investment.

Search is splitting in two, and most companies optimise for only one half

For twenty years, being found meant ranking in a list of blue links. That list still exists, but a growing share of buying journeys now begins somewhere else: a question typed into ChatGPT, an AI Overview at the top of Google, a summary in Gemini or Copilot. The answer that comes back does not offer ten options. It usually names two or three.

That is a fundamentally different competition. In classic search, position five still gets clicks. In a generated answer, being the brand that is mentioned is the whole prize, and being absent is invisible in a way that no ranking report will warn you about.

Generative Engine Optimization is the work of becoming one of the sources those systems draw on and trust. It is early, it is unevenly understood, and that is exactly what makes it worth doing now — the companies claiming these positions today are doing so at a fraction of what it will cost once every competitor is fighting for them.

How AI decides which brands to name

Language models do not rank pages the way a search engine does. They assemble an answer from what they have learned and, increasingly, from what they can retrieve live. Which means visibility comes from a different set of signals than the ones your SEO agency has been reporting on.

Clarity matters more than keyword density. A page that states plainly what your company does, who it serves and what makes it different is far more quotable than a page written to hit a keyword target. Structure matters: clean headings, direct answers to real questions, and structured data that tells a machine what it is looking at.

Corroboration matters most of all. A model is far more likely to name a company that is described consistently across many independent sources — industry publications, directories, review platforms, partner sites, forums where real people discuss the problem you solve. One excellent page on your own domain is a claim. The same facts repeated on sources the model already trusts is evidence.

What we actually do — and how we measure it

We begin with an AI-visibility audit: we put the questions your customers actually ask to ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, and we record who gets named. Usually it is a competitor, sometimes it is nobody, and occasionally it is you with outdated information attached to your name.

From there the work runs on three tracks in parallel. We fix how your brand is described as an entity — consistent facts, correct structured data, a clean technical foundation. We publish content built to be cited rather than skimmed: direct answers, specific numbers, clear definitions. And we earn mentions on the external sources those systems already lean on, which is where digital PR meets SEO.

Then we keep asking the questions. Every month we re-run the same prompts and show you where you now appear, where you do not, and which competitor still owns an answer we want. It is the closest thing to a ranking report that this new channel allows, and it improves as the work compounds.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

They overlap, but they are not the same. Strong SEO is a prerequisite — AI systems draw heavily on pages that already rank and on domains that already carry authority. GEO adds a different layer on top: being described consistently as an entity, writing content in a form that is easy to quote, and being corroborated by external sources. In practice we run them together, because the same investment feeds both classic rankings and AI citations.

Can you guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend us?

No, and anyone who does is selling something. These systems are probabilistic, they change without notice, and the same question can return different answers to different users. What we can do is systematically improve every signal that makes a mention more likely, and show you measurably whether it is working by re-running the same set of prompts each month.

How do you measure something that has no ranking report?

We build a fixed set of prompts based on the questions your buyers genuinely ask, and we track them the way you would track keywords: who is named, in what order, with what description, and whether your site is cited as a source. Over months that produces a clear picture of share of voice inside AI answers — and it makes it obvious which topics you own and which you do not.

Isn't it too early to invest in this?

It is early, which is the argument for rather than against. The signals that earn AI citations — authority, consistency, quotable content — take months to build, so companies that start once their competitors are already established will be paying to catch up. And because the work overlaps heavily with SEO, you are not betting on an unproven channel; you are strengthening your existing one while claiming a position in the new one.

Does GEO work for a small or very specialised company?

Often better than for a large one. Niche questions have fewer credible sources competing to answer them, so a specialised company with genuine expertise can become the obvious thing to cite far more quickly than it could ever rank first for a broad commercial keyword. If your market is narrow, that is an advantage here.
